Whilst challenges remain with our work in Sudan, we continue to support women in education within South Sudan. Here are a couple of our students in South Sudan benefitting from the generous contributions of our wonderful donors.
Zahra Shafie Abdul Fadil
Hello, my name is Zahra Shafie Abdul Fadil. I’m a student at the University of Juba, School of Medicine, 5th year. I come from Sudan, South Darfur, Nyala. I studied at Nyala University, then I came to Juba to continue the study at the University of Juba due to the current war in Sudan. A friend at School of Business in the University of Juba told us about WEP scholarship program. We applied and were accepted. The support from WEP caters for our tuition fees, rent, textbook, course requirements and living expenses. Now I no longer worry about anything because WEP gave me a laptop for my studies. WEP also supported us to an English language course at the British Council. It is a very good course. I am at level 2. It has improved my English.
Thank you so much for the support.

Treasure Abuor
I’m Ms. Treasure Abuor. I was in Sudan, but currently I’m in South Sudan due to the war. I was a student at AFAHD University.
I was in third year when the war broke out. Now I’m in fourth year at the University of Juba, School of Management, in the Department of Accounting and Finance. Thanks to WEP for continuing to support my Education in South Sudan. All in all, the courses are the same, but it’s really hard because the time-table is a bit hectic. With the one year, I’ve performed very well, and in my current the final year of study, I’ll do better.
When the war broke out in Sudan, I was for exams, and the shooting began. We thought that it was a normal thing, so we ignored it. The next day we went back to school, it was the same thing, so we were told to leave the school premises or go back to the dormitories. So when we reached the dormitories, there was no access to get water, unless you stock water for yourself, but there was no way of getting water or getting food from the store, so we stayed for like a week. Later on, an individual called us, and they gave us some money from bank, which we had to divide among ourselves. He also brought for us bread and salad to eat for that time. On 22nd February 2023, which was the Ramadan holiday, so we were told to escape, but it was still difficult, since we didn’t have finances.
The University gave each of us some money, which we managed to use for our transport to Jodha at the South Sudan border. We then managed to travel to Renk country in South Sudan. In Renk, we had no place for sleeping because the population displaced by the war in Sudan was already high. We managed to sleep under the verandas of the shops. It was raining heavily, we didn’t know anyone, and we didn’t have access to water and food.
The following day, we managed to get a bus coming to Paloch town. we had accidents on the way, people died. At Paloch it rained on us the whole day. We slept at the airport in Paloch. Some girls were raped. I was sexually harassed by a soldier. He came and held my breast and I fought back, and I was arrested. It was a very big case because they were threatening to kill me for fighting the soldier who assaulted me. I was lucky to be evacuated, a plane came, and I managed to go into that plane, and I came back to Juba. When came to Juba, my parents followed up, and they managed to get the soldier who harassed me.
After coming here, the WEP team through Mr. Chriss tried, so hard, to find all of us. I think I was the last person to be found. But I really appreciate the fact that WEP reach out to us and supported us to continue with our studies. Most of the schemes that provided scholarships for students in Sudan were not able to follow up them up after the war.
I really appreciate the fact that WEP is still supporting us, and we hope that since you’ve held our hand, we shall also hold other students’ hands. As an individual based, if it was not for the WEP scholarship, I think I would not be able to go to school, because I stayed home for three years after completing my secondary school examination.
Thereafter, I managed to go to Afhad University but was struggling paying the tuition fees. Through the recommendation of one of my lecturers, the WEP team came up and enrolled me for the scholarship. So, I really appreciate.
